In a bid to improve road safety at the intersection of Victoria Street and Rochor Road, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) is bringing forward plans to install overhead traffic lights at the junction as a precautionary measure on Tuesday.
The overhead traffic lights are expected to start operating from early next week, said LTA in a press release. It decided to bring forward the installation process – which was scheduled to begin in 2013 – after receiving feedback and suggestions from the public on how to further improve the road junction.
LTA’s announcement comes after two high-speed crashes occurred at the junction just weeks apart.
On 12 May, a three-vehicle pile-up occurred when a Ferrari beat a red light and slammed into a motorbike and a taxi -- killing three. Exactly two weeks later, a Lexus ran the red light at the exact same spot and crashed into a taxi.
However, LTA said that the overhead traffic lights will result in a narrowing of the pedestrian footpath there until full road reinstatement works – arising from the construction of the Downtown Line – are completed by mid-2013.
“This is a trade-off we have to make to accommodate the additional precautionary measure,” said LTA.
This latest move follows LTA’s announcement last week that they will be synchronising the green phase timing for the traffic lights at the pedestrian crossing linking Bugis Junction and Bugis Village, and the lights at the cross-road junction of Victoria Street and Rochor Road.
