Mambo Jambo hits the heartlands-Yahoo! Singapore(News)

Did you know you can take a People’s Association (PA) course on doing the “Mambo Jambo” complete with cheesy hand signs and choreography?

No kidding.

Birthed and bred in Singapore, the mid-week party at Zouk, orMambo Night as it’s more popularly known, is already into its 20th year and counting, so much so it has almost become a rite of passage for many young Singaporeans.

But thanks to the folks at PA, Mambo Jambo has been slowly making its way into the heartlands. Since the earlier half of this year, PA has been holding Mambo Jambo courses.

Anytime from now, interested members of the public dying to be part of the Mambo crowd can enrol in a PAssion Mambo dance course at a cost of S$40 for four sessions at selected Community Clubs (CCs) including Bishan East CC and Geylang Serai CC.

There are even three genres to the course to cater to different age groups – children, youths and young adults, and of course, the older folks set to go over the top to relive their sweet youth.
An initiative by the Lifeskills & Lifestyle division of the PA, which also roped in the help of the young and trendy Mambo regulars at Zouk, the mass dance is intended “ to have participants of all ages from different races and background coming together to dance, exercise and have fun”.
When asked how response for the course has been, a PA spokesperson told Yahoo! Singapore “it has been quite good so far” and that they had “very enthusiastic” trainers offering their services when the training course started last June.
“We have a range of trainers from different dance genres joining us in PAssion Mambo,” she added. We started out with trainers in their early 20s to 30s; it has since expanded to include trainers as old as 60 years old.”
"Dance has always been a very popular form of community bonding for PA; we do see that there will be a crowd, an interest for these courses,” she said.
However, a check with a staff at another participating CC revealed otherwise –the course hasn’t been too well received at her desk.

“Maybe because it’s new in the market,” she guessed.

New? Maybe not.

But guess what – if you see an auntie or uncle grooving to “Together Forever” at your nearest void deck or line-dancing jam, you’ll know why.
