Two women rescued part of a group of Malaysians who were drowning off an area near Desaru in Johor on Monday.
Two Singapore women helped to rescue part of a group of seven Malaysians who were drowning off a beach in Johor on Monday, reported The New Paper (TNP).
24-year-old Rita Zuhaida Mohd Nazeer and her best friend Siti Aqilah were holidaying with their families at Tanjung Balau, an area near coastal resort spot Desaru, over the Chinese New Year weekend. They were swimming with Siti’s 16-year-old nephew in the water at about 1:30pm on Monday when the trio heard the shouts of a girl who was about 10m away from them, the paper reported.
Rita Zuhaida told TNP that she saw the girl was with six others — two men, three boys and another girl. She said she realised something was amiss when the two men with the girl were not responding to her cries, particularly when the group started flailing their arms in the water.
With Siti and her nephew’s help, she swam out against strong currents to pull a girl and two men to shallower water, while lifeguards and other people at the beach rescued the other girl and the two boys, although they did not realise that the third was missing, according to TNP.
Malaysian media reported that the 17-year-old boy’s body was found about an hour after the incident occurred. When she saw him, Rita Zuhaida said that she broke down in regret.
“If only I had worn goggles, I could have helped to look. If only I knew there was one more in the water,” she said, adding to TNP that she had not slept well since the incident occurred.
The waters near Desaru are known to be dangerous during Malaysia’s monsoon season, which falls between November and March, according to the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency.
Malaysian daily The Star reported on Thursday that another teen had been swept out to sea the very next afternoon, while at the same spot with his friends. The 18-year-old boy’s body was found on Wednesday morning, local police said
